Whether you’re a musician who wants to practice without disturbing others in your home or you just want a quiet space for yourself, having a soundproofed room in your house can feel like a godsend. Of course, the most extreme soundproofing solutions involve knocking down walls and installing insulation that blocks nearly all sound, but you don’t have to go that far to soundproof a space. If you want your soundproofing project to not become an extensive remodel, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Hang Soundproof Blankets On Your Walls
The easiest way to soundproof a room without a renovation is to hang heavy soundproof blankets on the walls. You’ll end up with a soft covering on all of your walls, so it won’t do much for your aesthetics, but you’ll have a quiet room after just a little bit of work.
Set Up a Partition
If you don’t need to soundproof an entire room, you can use temporary partitions lined with soundproof blankets or foam to block noise to and from a small space. This is a great option if you have several activities in a single room.
Install Acoustic Panels
Acoustic panels come in a variety of styles. The most basic are sheets of foam that can be hung on walls much like soundproofing blankets. More elaborate panels come in wood and fabric, and some even resemble works of art for those who want to decorate a space while keeping it soundproof. Installing these panels requires a little more work than hanging blankets, but it can still be done without knocking down your walls.
Seal The Gaps
If you have cracks in your walls or windows that aren’t properly sealed, no amount of acoustic paneling or soundproof blankets will keep your space completely quiet. Sound will bleed in from other rooms unless you seal the cracks. Some window stripping will take care of any windows in your room, while a little caulk or putty will seal the cracks.
Add Carpeting and Curtains
Putting curtains on your walls and installing carpet may not completely soundproof a room, but it will absorb enough sound to make your other soundproofing efforts all the more effective. Any curtains you hang should be heavy enough to absorb sound coming in and out of your room, while thicker carpet works best if you want a quieter space. If you don’t want to install a permanent carpeted floor, some heavy rugs should do the trick.
