Top 6 Ways to Make Your Garage an Extension of Your Home Interior

In Mid-Century homes, the garage connects to the home using an entry door. Traditionally, this room that connects the yard and the home has provided a parking spot for vehicles and storage space. In newer homes, the garage offers a multi-use space, but with a little renovation, your older home’s garage can transform into an extra room. Let’s consider the six most common ways to make your home’s garage an extension of your home’s interior.

1. Workshop

Many homeowners do woodwork, metalwork, or work on their cars on the weekends. The garage can become a workshop for them with only a few changes, including cleaning and seal coating the flooring to make the floor glimmer and gleam while resisting stains. Install a window or replace the garage door with a design that includes upper-level windows. Paint the walls and put in shelving and a peg board to organize tools.

2. Displaying Stored Collections

Instead of storing collections of matchbox cars, Star Wars memorabilia, or dolls in boxes, hang shelves in the garage along one wall. Install track on the ceiling and floor, then slide a piece of clear glass into the tracks. You’ve created a safe display case for your collection.

3. Parking

You can still park your vehicles in your garage. Perhaps you’ve already purchased an electric vehicle or want to do so. Upgrade the electrical in your garage to feature a rapid charger for your electric car. Your ecological EV also benefits from the new garage door, which adds to its safety.

4. Entertaining Space

Transform your garage into an entertainment room. Ditch the old-school entry door for French doors. Paint the walls and ceiling to freshen the room. Use a room rug to delineate the entertaining space, then set up a dining table and chairs. Create a conversational space with two or more chairs and a coffee table or shared side table. If you want to use other areas of the garage for parking or a workshop, use a folding room divider to separate the spaces in style.

5. Spare Bedroom

Your garage could become a spare bedroom, in part or entirely. If you renovate the room into a large bedroom, you’ll have a space you can rent for extra income. Turning a corner into a mini-bedroom offers a spot for unexpected guests. A divider wall can separate the sleeping area from the parking spot. Either way, consider adding a half bathroom to the garage to accommodate your guests and reduce traffic into the main house.

6. Teen’s Den

A simple renovation can also create a fun room for teenagers to spend time playing musical instruments, computer games, or a gaming system. Creating this space in the home’s garage moves the noise away from adult ears.
